Noel Langley rides the tide at Jazz in the Round

The Cockpit Theatre’s monthly series Jazz in the Round presents the debut of virtuosic trumpeter Noel Langley’s new sextet, the Edentide Ensemble,on Monday 28 September at 8pm.

Having released Edentide in 2014, Langley’s performance will be the first opportunity to hear its contents live and re-arranged for a formidable six-piece ensemble including the astounding pianist Alcyona Mick and drummer Asaf Sirkis. Opening the performance with a dynamic, hard-swinging set of standards and originals is the reformation of Chris Valentine’s trombone fronted troupe, On The Slide. The band’s sound is heavily inspired by the big bands of the 1950s and consists of current NYJO trombonists Owen Dawson, Maddie Dowdeswell and James Buckle who will be joined by vocalist Jessica Radcliffe.

Jazz In The Round’s middle set will feature the spirited duo Binker and Moses comprising of Binker Golding on tenor saxophone and invigorating young drummer Moses Boyd. Having formed an unbreakable bond during their development as part of Gary Crosby’s initiative Tomorrow’s Warriors and travels alongside vocalist Zara McFarlane’s touring ensemble, the pair will explore inventive and passionate late Coltrane-esque concepts and ideas initially formed through jams and explorative experiments during soundchecks.

The October edition of Jazz In The Round, on Monday 26 October presents the former Jazz Messenger and tenor saxophone veteran Jean Toussaint. Coming from a background steeped in hard-bop and ‘Blakey-shuffle’ tradition, Toussaint will be headlining with a quartet set of joyful and fiery originals alongside some of the UK’s finest musicians – pianist Andrew McCormack, bassist Larry Bartley and drummer Troy Miller. The first act of the evening will be an eclectic ensemble led by the up-and-coming tuba player Theon Cross who has begun to follow in the footsteps of his mentor, Oren Marshall. Inspired by genres spanning from Afrobeat to second-line, Cross will be joined by the imaginative tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia and drummer Moses Boyd.

Between the ensemble acts will be a solo performance from multifarious saxophonist and composer Raymond MacDonald. Moving away from standard jazz tradition, MacDonald will present a fascinating improvised set drawing from contemporary and experimental jazz.
