UK based imprint Whirlwind Recordings have a swirl of delicious discs planned for the New Year, beginning on 29 January with Mell’s Bells, the latest album from ebullient saxophonist Sam Crockatt and his quartet featuring Kit Downes (piano), Oli Hayhurst (double bass) and James Maddren (drums). The ensemble will launch the album with a performance at Pizza Express Jazz Club, London on 2 February, with a series of UK dates to follow: Anteros Arts, Norwich (3 Feb); The Beaver Inn, Appledore (18 Apr); Western Hotel, St Ives (19 April); Restormel Arts, St Austell (20 April); Sound Cellar, The Blue Boar, Poole (21 April); Burdell’s Yard, Bath (22 April); Illminster Arts Centre (23 April) and The Spin, Oxford (30 June).

Next up from the label is the fourth record from New York based saxophonist/composer Patrick Cornelius, who’ll back it with a UK tour. Matt Ridley collaborates again with Jason Yarde for his forthcoming release on 26 February, following their splendid work together on 2013’s Thymos. Fiery Russian sax player Zhenya Strigalev issues his new trio set on 4 March, with the powerhouse rhythm team of bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Eric Harland, for what promises to be an experimental collection threaded with melodic outbreaks. Renowned London-based US drummer Jeff Williams’ album Outlier, with another strong line-up of Downes, Sam Lasserson, Phil Robson and Josh Arcoleo, will be released on 18 March.
