Ahead of the release of singer Jacqui Dankworth’s new album Back To You, her first in five years, a tour has been confirmed which will feature material from the disc. The album balances six self-penned originals with six covers of songs by artists such as Sting, James Taylor and Bob Mintzer. As the daughter of two legendary British jazz figureheads, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, Jacqui Dankworth was exposed to live performance from an early age. Her career path began as an actress, including stints at the RSC and the National Theatre. Since directing her attention to jazz, she has performed alongside internationally acclaimed artists such as Björk, Courtney Pine and Elvis Costello. Her last album was Detour Ahead in 2004. The tour begins on Thursday at the Camberley Theatre in Surrey (14 May). Further dates include: Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton (Wednesday 20 May); Coventry Jazz Festival (Friday 22 May); Buzzard Theatre, Leighton (Saturday 23 May); Civic Theatre, Chelmsford (Thursday 28 May); Pavilion, Worthing (Friday 29 May); Haslemere Hall, Surrey (Saturday 30 May) and Southport Jazz Festival (Sunday 31 May) followed by more dates in June.
