The roar of overhead traffic provides the unusual acoustic setting for this year’s Flyover Show on 13 June in the Hockley area of Birmingham. Alto saxophonist/MC Soweto Kinch leads the event and is joined by a global line-up of artists from as far afield as Johannesburg and New York. Distinguished poet Linton Kwesi Johnson is also set to perform. As well as Kinch the schedule of musicians includes saxophonist Andy Hamilton, pianist Robert Mitchell, vibraphone player Corey Mwamba and acclaimed singer Eska Mtungwazi. The one-day show encompasses performance poetry, dance, visual art, and includes live performances from grime and hip hop MCs such as headliners Bashy and Ty. Now in its second year, the Flyover Show focuses on showcasing emerging talent from Britain’s urban communities and on reclaiming abandoned spaces, transforming them into arenas for creative expression. There is a special focus this year on saving the adjacent Muhammad Ali Centre from demolition. Admission is free and the event begins at midday. David Tshulak Go to www.bebo.com/flyovershow for more.
