The line-up for next month’s Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival has been unveiled by the organisers. Taking place from 31 July and running to 9 August, the opening night features Roy Hargrove and his quintet at the Queen’s Hall. Grammy award-winning US trumpeter Hargrove, 39, who debuted with Diamond In The Rough 20 years ago, has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz including Wynton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock. His most recent quintet album Ear Food was released last year by Emarcy. Other headliners this year include boogie-woogie pianist, bandleader and TV presenter Jools Holland and his Rhythm And Blues Orchestra, bassist Jack Bruce of Cream renown, and blues singer Eric Burdon, formerly of The Animals. Jazz and blues fans will also want to check out jam band Galactic founder Stanton Moore’s trio and Danish hipsters, Ibrahim Electric.

The festival takes place at nine venues across the Scottish capital, from traditional concert halls to the more unconventional live music venue, the Central Library. As well as international stars such as pianist Makoto Ozone from Tokyo, and highly promising Seattle teenage reeds player Carl Majeau, the festival is keen to promote the Scottish Jazz Expo which showcases new national jazz projects with saxophonists Tommy Smith and Phil Bancroft scheduled. Also for Edinburgh, French piano veteran Jacques Loussier and his current trio will be performing Bach and Ravel, 50 years on from his famous trio record, Play Bach No. 1.
