The Glasgow Jazz Festival is just 10 days away, kicking off on 19 June and running until the last day of the month when the fest comes to a climax with an exclusive solo concert by Chick Corea who performs at the O2 Academy. Also for Glasgow, at the Tron Theatre, is veteran saxophonist Bobby Wellins with his quartet who perform with special guests from the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Glasgow will also host “new conception of jazz” Norwegian keyboards kingpin and doyen of the influential Oslo Bla club scene, Bugge Wesseltoft, who presents his solo project which combines jazz piano with loops, grooves, and live electronics. For piano trio fans, Scottish bassist Calum Gourlay is joined by rising star and former Empirical pianist Kit Downes (now in Troyka) along with drummer James Maddren. Also likely to draw the crowds are acid jazz legends JTQ, bassist Kyle Eastwood’s quintet, and Acoustic Ladyland who release new album Living With A Tiger next month on 6 July. As for larger groups, the BBC Big Band with special guest saxophonist Art Themen, and the Ryan Quigley Big Band, are also all set for Glasgow while the festival also welcomes free jazz and improv icon Evan Parker, appearing with his double quartet.
