London-based music organisation Tomorrow’s Warriors, which mentors a new generation of young jazz musicians, presents a major day of music this Friday, 24 July.

Titled Behind The Scenes the free entry all-dayer begins at 2pm in the Front Room of the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank with three line-ups comprising the Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz Orchestra, Youth Future Warriors and Teenie Warriors.

The day includes open rehearsals and performances hosted by bassist Gary Crosby, the Tomorrow’s Warriors artistic director who was recently awarded an OBE.

New Orleansian trumpeter Abram Wilson now resident in London and the assistant artistic director will lead the opening Teenie Warriors concert (2pm) with the kids who range from 8-12 years old followed an hour later in the QEH by an open rehearsal of the Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz Orchestra working on the charts of pianist Peter Edwards’ big band suite ‘Above And Beyond The Horizon’, a piece inspired by Duke Ellington’s composition ‘The Queen’s Suite’.

At 5pm back in the Front Room it’s the turn of the Youth Warriors and a chance for the South Bank audience to hear several new stars in the making for the first time, some of whom have worked over the years at workshops organised by Tomorrow’s Warriors at London jazz venues.

The evening concert at 8pm in the QEH features the 15-piece TWJO performing ‘The Queen’s Suite’ and Edwards’ suite inspired by it rehearsed earlier in the day. Poet Lemn Sissay will introduce the evening concert.
