Just two weeks after this year’s Mercury Music Prize shortlist was revealed enterprising promoters Trouble Tune have pulled together an evening of jazz, hip-hop, dance music, and experimental electronica, featuring no less than three past and present nominees. With relatively unknown south London rapper Speech Debelle making this year’s shortlist with her intelligent, jazzified debut album Speech Therapy being the most recent member of this exclusive club, previous nominees altoist/MC Soweto Kinch and Polar Bear drummer Seb Rochford and laptopist Leafcutter John also appear on the varied bill.

It all kicks off at 5.30pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall’s spacious Front Room freestage with a set from spoken word/electronic artist Charlie Dark, who collaborates with sound/artist producer James Bulley with projections specially created by London Film School graduates Rubens Azevedo and Teppei Nogaki. Engaging rapper Speech Debelle follows with her highly personalised take on rap, characterised by wry tales of her troubled youth and a precocious use of live groove-based jazz sounds, this will be one of her first gigs since her recent Mercury nomination.

Things take a decidedly jazzy twist across the concourse at the extremely hip Concrete bar that sits adjacent to the Hayward Gallery with an exclusive experimental set at 8.45pm from Nails, the new project from laptop maverick Leafcutter John and drummer/electronics man Seb Rochford. Altoist/MC Soweto Kinch closes this busy evening at 10.30pm with his own brand of jazz-informed hip-hop that packs both a lyrical and rhythmic punch.
