At last night’s Grammys the jazz categories were definitely the Cinderellas of the night with barely a glimpse in the TV coverage and the winners names listed way down in the small print. But unlike the Brits awards over here at least the music actually gets some awards. The big winners were the late Joe Zawinul for his album 75 in the best contemporary jazz category; Kurt Elling scooped best jazz vocal album for Dedicated To you: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman; Terence Blanchard won for best improvised jazz solo on Tain Watt’s album Watts; best instrumental album went to the Five Peace band – Live; while in the large jazz ensemble category the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra picked up for Book One. Other winners included Bebo Valdes and Chucho Valdes for Juntos Para Siempre in the latin jazz album category.
