Probably the biggest jazz festival in Europe the North Sea Jazz Festival annually pulls in most of the major jazz talent in the world, crammed in over three days. But in recent years the programme has rarely featured much of the new or established UK jazz scene. However, in a further sign that the word is getting out about the health of today’s scene here the Rotterdam festival held this year from 9-11 July has a lively smattering of top UK jazz talent. Featured UK bands include Phronesis, Brass Jaw, Andy Sheppard, trioVD, John Escreet Project, Jerry Dammers Spatial AKA Orchestra and Colin Towns’ Mask Orchestra. Top international artists booked this year include Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny. For more go to www.northseajazz.com
