The Vortex and Café Oto in Dalston are to host Alpenglow next month featuring UK and Austrian improvised music. Promoted by Sound and Music in collaboration with the Graz V:NM festival, the three-dayer, taking place in London from 24-26 September, has a line-up that includes musicians from the Austrian state of Styria and the UK, chosen by British pianist and composer Veryan Weston and Austrian vocalist Annette Giesriegl.

Weston, a veteran of the improv scene dating back to the days of the Little Theatre club, curates Alpenglow with Giesriegl who is interested in many experimental styles of singing. On her CD Free Ethno from 2006, she explored many styles from all over the world, adding vocal sounds, electronics and percussion. The collaborating artists taking part also include Steve Beresford, Alison Blunt, Gail Brand, Angharad Davies, Jane Dickson, James Dunn, Elisabeth Harnik, Seppo Gründler, Josef Klammer, Katherina Klement, Caroline Kraabel, Peter Lackner, Klaus Lang, Hannah Marshall, Hugh Metcalfe, Maggie Nichols and many others.

With an emphasis on experimentation and improvisation this is the first time the two clubs have worked together on such a concept. Café Oto, in just over two years has established itself as a centre for improv and free-jazz programming and has hosted residencies including one back in January by saxophone firebrand Peter Brötzmann, while Japanese composer and drummer Ikue Mori is at Oto in residence from tomorrow continuing until Saturday. The Vortex has also just announced its programme running during the 10 days of the London Jazz Festival in November.
