Set on a rugged Hebridean island, the Islay Jazz Festival returns next month with a diverse line-up and a new sponsor in the form of whisky maker Lagavulin. With a population of just 3,200 people the island boasts no fewer than eight whiskey distilleries and a stunningly beautiful natural backdrop for a weekend’s worth of contemporary jazz from 17-19 September.

The most prominent international name appearing will be New Orleans alto saxophonist Jesse Davis, a burning bop player who studied under Ellis Marsalis and has since worked with Roy Hargrove and Kenny Barron among many others. Kicking off the festival on Friday 17 September he’ll be dueting with Manchester-born pianist Paul Harrison, who now lives in Scotland and is best know for his trio Trianglehead (with saxophonist Martin Kershaw and drummer Stuart Ritchie).

Davis will also appear with the Islay All Star Band that includes leading Scottish musicians, trumpeter Colin Steele and saxophonist Phil Bancroft, all combining in an exciting large ensemble. Pianist Zoe Rahman also appears in a trio with bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Stu Brown on Saturday 18 September, and in a solos, duos and trio with acclaimed Trio AAB saxophonist/leader Phil Bancroft and busy trumpeter Colin Steele. Fine bop orientated Scottish National Jazz Orchestra alto saxophonist Martin Kershaw and rising star guitarist Graeme Stephen also lead their own modern jazz groups as well as appearing in several other line-ups across the programme.
