Tim Garland in the space of 20 years has carved out a career as a highly distinctive saxophonist and composer with a sense of his own English identity as a player and at the same time establishing his own place within the jazz tradition. As well as founding his own groups, Garland has played extensively with both Bill Bruford and Chick Corea and has been commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra to write a concerto. This month his Lighthouse Trio, with GWILYM SIMCOCK and ASAF SIRKIS , releases a striking new album which also features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the latest chapter in a fascinating journey for Garland. Interview:: Stuart Nicholson.

Libra can mean an astrological sign, a star constellation, a piece of computer software,  a search engine for academic papers, a butterfly, a novel by Don DeLillo, and, following its 31 January launch date at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London, an album by Tim Garland. Featuring his Lighthouse Trio with pianist Gwilym Simcock and percussionist Asaf Sirkis, this impressive double CD set presents the latest update on the state of the award-winning saxophonist’s art. With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and guest artists Paul Bollenback on guitar and the Sacconi Strings, it moves deftly from studio tracks recorded in New York and London’s famous Abbey Road to a live date by the trio in front of a packed house in London’s Stationer’s Hall. Quite possibly the finest album by a British jazz musician in recent times, it is certainly the most ambitious and will be supported by an extensive UK tour.
