David S Ware – Downtown Deity

001 cover Dec-Jan16CDThe late David S Ware, who died in October 2012, emerged from New York's 1970s loft scene to become a champion of free jazz principles. Even his dalliance with a major label could do nothing to quench his indomitable fire, as he continued to sustain and develop the ideas previously laid out by pioneers such as John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor. Philip Clark surveys Ware's questing music and spoke to pianist Matthew Shipp to assesses the iconoclastic saxophonist's lasting legacy as documented on a series of archival recordings issued by the Brooklyn-based AUM Fidelity imprint

Stuart Nicholson spoke with the makers of EST Symphony about paying tribute to a jazz revolutionary

Dave Holland and Aziza – Dreams of The Elder

Jazzwise-November2016-Cover350Double-bassist Dave Holland was famously mentored by Miles Davis, now through his various academic roles he's busy passing on his flair and experience, inspiring and advising a younger generation of jazz players. Ahead of his headline performance at this year's EFG London Jazz Festival with his new group project Aziza – featuring Chris Potter, Lionel Loueke and Eric Harland – Selywn Harris spoke to Holland about the principles behind his educational methods and the plugged-in potency of his star-studded quartet
