Description
If the flawlessly hip sounds of their New Morning concert (see this month's DVDs) are anything to go by, then this is a band bristling with crisp arrangements and truly top draw players. Opening things with a mouthwatering set with eternally youthful pianist Hank Jones, the second half will feature Lovano's superlative Nonet (as heard on the excellent Streams Of Expression set from last year) playing music from Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool; which re-cast through 21st century eyes ands ears should reveal both its huge influence and its rich resources as a body of work that still has relevance today. With Joe Lovano (tenor sax), Steve Slagle (alto sax), Ralph Lalama (tenor sax), Gary Smulyan (baritone sax), Barry Reis (trumpet), Larry Farrell (trombone), Dennis Irwin (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums).
