The Spin - Archive
DescriptionThe Spin has steadily gained a reputation in the jazz world for great music. With a heady atmosphere the audience always manages to temper Their unbridled enthusiasm with a respectful hush for what's happening on the stand. This hip mix of students and committed jazzophiles, friendly bar staff and relaxed candlelit vibe and groovy sounds have made it a prime fixture on the UK jazz scene; a venue popular with players and audiences alike. Located in the heart of Oxford, down a cute little alleyway the club operates most Thursdays of the year in a dedicated, great-sounding music room above The Wheatsheaf Inn. The club has its own bar serving good wines and beers with the pub offering a selection of real ales downstairs - all at pub rather than club prices. Set up in May 1999 by Oxford musicians, guitarist Pete Oxley and drummer Mark Doffman, the club maintains a weekly programme that includes both touring bands and guest musicians appearing with the house trio. From the beginning, the club's aim has been to promote music that is contemporary and that reaches out beyond a core jazz audience. Guest artists and bands over the last few years have include Gilad Atzmon, Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio, The New Jazz Couriers, John Etheridge, Tim Garland Quartet, Roger Beaujolais, Tim Whitehead, Jonathan Gee and many other great performers. The club has twice received PRS Foundation grants and was nominated for Best Jazz Club in the 2006 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Seats can be reserved in advance by visiting the club's website, clicking on 'Gig Listings' and then following the link to the online booking service.
