Day four of the festival, so what’s on at the LJF tonight? Happy Monday to you, and all! Pianist Billy Childs is at Ronnie Scott’s for one, and over at the QEH it’s Michel Portal’s Baïlador band, that’s the great French bass clarinettist with Ambrose Akinmusire, Bojan Z, Lionel Loueke, Scott Colley with fine drummer Nasheet Waits, the son of the great Freddie Waits who was the drummer on McCoy Tyner’s Expansions and Pharoah’s Karma. Support is from MY Duo, pianist Andrew McCormack and Jason Yarde. Matthew Halsall is at the Barfly, and classy violinist Regina Carter with support from Trish Clowes is in the Purcell Room. Oliver’s in Greenwich features Mark Hanslip and Dave Mannington while ECM pianist Colin Vallon is at the Pizza Express Jazz Club. Free thinking Zhenya Strigalev is at the Baltic restaurant in Blackfriars, while the Martin Shaw quintet is at the 606, Mark Lockheart of Polar Bear is on at the Vortex in Dalston playing Ellington In Anticipation, and MA hit Charlie Wright’s. Boogie-woogie supremo Ben Waters plays the Bull’s Head and The Music of Sidney Bechet is celebrated at Boisdale Canary Wharf. If you’re up for a jam then head for Charlie Wright’s in Hoxton beginning at 11.30pm. Should be a good one. – Stephen Graham
