The Necks who recently released Mindset, their latest studio album and their first on vinyl, play the LJF tonight and tomorrow at the Bishopsgate Institure, near Liverpool Street station. The Australian minimalist piano trio – which has a steadfast and growing underground following among jazz, improv and classical music fans drawn to their original sounding improvising ethic – are a popular draw and quite something live, and have been around since the late-1980s. Also tonight and on the scene for decades more another main highlight at the London Jazz Festival sees the great bebop drum legend Roy Haynes, at 86 still playing a storm as festival footage on YouTube confirmed from the European circuit last year. Talking the talk he firstly appears tonight in the popular Hear Me Talkin To Ya slot at 6pm followed by a full concert later in the evening with his Fountain of Youth band in the QEH. Stephen Graham
