US saxophonist Joshua Redman is touring the UK this month to support the release of his album, Back East, released earlier this year. An important figure in contemporary jazz, and son of Dewey Redman, his swinging hard bop style gained him instant notoriety when he arrived on the scene in 1991. His 1998 album, Timeless Tales (For Changing Times) saw him embrace a more explorative approach, combining rock and electronic elements to his writing.
Now touring with his acoustic trio, marking an increasingly back to basics approach compared to his groove-based Elastic Band work, audiences can look forward to hearing Redman’s fluid improvisational skills with the more spacious backing of Reuben Rogers (bass) and Greg Hutchinson (drums). Reinterpretations of Redman’s tenor forefathers, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter are all apparent on the latest record and so audiences should expect a decidedly east coast style, which Redman considers his "musical bread and butter." Redman has managed to attract a who’s who of new British talent to support his tour across the country. At his London Jazz Festival appearance on 22 November, the critically acclaimed Empirical will be riding high on the success of their debut album when playing the Queen Elizabeth Hall, while multi-award winning pianist, Gwilym Simcock, will be warming up the crowd at Redman’s final UK performance in Poole. The complete tour dates are: The Anvil, Basingstoke (20 Nov), St. George's, Bristol (21 Nov), Queen Elizabeth Hall, London (22 Nov), Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham (23 Nov) and Lighthouse, Poole (25 Nov).
