Quite staggeringly tonight marks the debut of the UK’s leading jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine at Ronnie Scott’s in London, the first of two special nights at the club with the Jazz Warriors, when he launches their new album Afropeans. Speaking exclusively to Jazzwise, Courtney says: “I actually sat in with Elvin Jones there and got a European tour with him out of it. Art [Blakey] came backstage and told Elvin to take me on tour – Art had made up his mind about me when he sat in with the Jazz Warriors. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to headline at Ronnie’s ever!”
Courtney takes the Jazz Warriors on to the Ronnie’s bandstand to mark the release of the new live album recorded last year at the Barbican. The album released on Destin-e records features Courtney on bass clarinet and flute as well as saxophone with a large cast of musicians, including trumpeter Byron Wallen and saxophonist Jason Yarde, drummer Robert Fordjour and violinist Omar Puente plus new stars in the making, steel pan player Samuel Dubois and cellist Ayanna Witter Johnson. The album marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the former British Empire. Stephen Graham
