Pat MethenyLondon’s Barbican, the powerhouse large concert hall jazz promoter in the capital, has announced details of its programme for the early part of 2010. First up on 19 January at satellite venue LSO St Luke’s saxophonist Jason Yarde presents his 10-piece band Acoutastic Bombastic followed at the Barbican itself on 24 January by Latin Music USA, a BBC4 TV documentary concert tie-in featuring The Big 3 Palladium Orchestra with Machito Jr, Tito Rodriguez Jr, with special guests Jimmy Bosch, Larry Harlow and support by salsa band La Excelencia.

Then Jan Garbarek returns to the UK with his new group featuring Trilok Gurtu on 31 January as part of a short UK tour. The Norwegian is followed by Pat Metheny (left) with his Orchestrion project on 10 February, a unique concert by the great American guitarist who has developed a new instrument which is like a small orchestra in itself played by just Pat.

Hit young London group Portico Quartet follow on 8 March for their first major concert hall outing on the heels of their critically acclaimed new album Isla. And hot from his much talked about London Jazz Festival appearance Tomasz Stanko returns to London on 27 March this time to reprise for the first time at the Barbican his Komeda project first performed in London back in 1997. The iconic South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and his group Ekaya return to the Barbican on 30 March.

In April it’s the turn of Dee Dee Bridgewater and her Billie Holiday project on the 16th supported by her daughter China Moses paying tribute to Dinah Washington. The extraordinary Bobby McFerrin appears on 29 May and then the following month Wynton Marsalis is back for the first concerts of his new residency at the Barbican with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra appearing on 17 and 18 June at the Barbican itself and on 20 June at Hackney Empire.
