Leading British trumpeter/composer/arranger Guy Barker (pictured left), has teamed up with the 86-piece BBC Philharmonic Orchestra to perform his new arrangements of Miles Davis’ best-selling album, Kind of Blue, in a concert that will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 this Wednesday, 17 October, at 6.30pm from the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool. The concert will also feature new arrangements of pieces from Miles’ second classic quintet with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, including music from Nefertiti and Miles In The Sky, as well as original orchestral passages composed by Barker. Several featured jazz soloists will perform alongside the orchestra and will include saxophonists Rosario Giuliani and Benjamin Herman, trumpeter Martin Shaw, trombonist Barnaby Dickinson and pianist Ross Stanley.

This concert is part of an exceptionally busy autumn for Barker as he also gears up for the launch of the London Jazz Festival’s opening night vocal extravaganza, Jazz Voice. As in previous years, Barker has created a varied programme of songs marking many jazz-related anniversaries, alongside sometimes-tenuous historical links (all kept secret until the night of the performance), scored for the specially convened 40-piece festival orchestra.

This year’s line up of guest vocals stars has just been announced and includes Imelda May, Grammy-award Patti Austin, jazz-soul singer Juliet Roberts, Brendan Reilly, Claire Martin, Gwyneth Herbert, Junior Giscombe and Natalie Duncan. The concert will be hosted by actor/comedian John Sessions, and will launch the London Jazz Festival at the Barbican, on Friday 9 November at 7.30pm.
