Acclaimed London-based Mancunian clarinettist Arun Gosh has composed a contemporary-edged soundtrack to The Adventures of Prince Achmed a film directed by Lotte Reiniger in 1926, its the oldest surviving feature-length animation in cinema history. Performed tonight at The Albany in London, Gosh’s soundtrack is eclectically influenced and draws from cinematic orchestration of the 1970s Blaxpoitation, classic westerns, Bollywood melodrama and Hammer horror films. The evening is set to be an immersive experience, with the theatre being completely transformed into a Moroccan ‘Bedouin Lounge’, with the film projected around the audience with the musicians seen only as silhouettes.

With the music being performed live in front of the projected film, the culture clash in sounds will blend authentic traditional Morrocan music and modern jazz. Thus the Morrocan Berber band, Inouras, will feature Khalid El Berkaoui, Bakari Lahbib, Mustapha Amal and El Hassan Bounlaik plus a jazz ensemble of vibist Corey Mwamba, cellist Jenny Adejayen, bass clarinettist Howard Jacobs and Arun’s regular rhythm section of bassist Liran Donin and drummer/percussionist Rastko Rasic.
