Jazz breaking news: Chick Corea unveils The Vigil at Ronnie Scott's

It was during the penultimate song of a five tune set that Chick Corea began to roll his sleeves up as this slow burning club gig finally began reach gale force intensity. Launching his new quintet, under the banner of The Vigil, Corea and his mainly youthful new crew were fresh from cutting their debut album, and even though this was a two-night, four-set stand, this high-octane group took their time to settle into its groove. Not surprising really when you have the raw power of drummer Marcus Gilmore and frighteningly adept bass star Hadrien Feraud just waiting to hit the afterburners, with powerful guitarist Charles Altura and great Brit multi-reedist Tim Garlard bringing more firepower to the frontline. Corea controlled all of this with his easygoing grin and laid back stage manner, belying the steely intelligence that fuels his often-complex music. They opened with a latinised take on the Parker/Gillespie bop classic ‘Hot House’, the piano maestro peppering montuno piano lines and elongating the head so that the tune sounded closer to Return to Forever’s Spanish flourishes than a heated 52nd Street bop standard. If that pensive feel had the band simmering, then the brooding 6/4 groove of the Roy Haynes-dedicated ‘Royalty’ also kept things bubbling rather than boiling over.

Avoiding some of the densely plotted charts of his Elektrik band, the presence of Garland and Feraud seemed to add both European and Mediterranean flavours to the mix. Yet it was the open, Weather Report-esque ‘Pledge For Peace’, where things finally began to lift off. Feraud has an almost unmatched command of the bass guitar – so much so he acted like a hyperactive left hand for Corea throughout, while also moving into guitar territory with chords and lightning fast solos – leaving Altura looking a little redundant on some songs. The open, blues-tinged ‘Pledge For Peace’ saw the bassist move to the fretless, evoking Jaco but taking his legacy well into the 21st century, as he set up a quicksilver dialogue with Corea. Garland switched to soprano and opened up in gloriously impassioned style too, dispatching tightly woven lines in heated cascades of notes. The closing, unnamed, knotty electro-funk workout was the highlight of the set, (before the inevitable, but artfully rejigged encore of ‘Spain’) with Corea shifting between Fender Rhodes and wailing retro synth sounds, the full contrapuntal powers of this promising new band coalescing with thrilling results. As world premieres go this was pretty special, a high-profile showcase of some extraordinary world-class talent, albeit with a few rough edges, yet this only added to the joy of hearing the band climb the heady heights of greatness.

Jazz breaking news: Bobby McFerrin gets blue and beautiful at the Barbican

The audience is treated to the familiar and the unfamiliar. Recognisable from his trademark black T-shirt, faded blue jeans and graying dreads, Bobby McFerrin takes the stage to the kind of rapturous applause that comes with 40-years of redefining the rules of jazz singing. But he is trailed by a six-piece band, of which the notable members are keyboardist-accordionist-arranger Gil Goldstein and drummer Ali Jackson Jnr, the rhythmic bedrock of JALCO. Given the fact that McFerrin has taken the art of solo performance to giddy heights since his astounding album The Voice, it is a shock to see him flanked by two guitars and acoustic bass as well as the aforesaid instruments.

Tonight’s programme, SpiritYouAll, draws primarily on gospel and blues of an ancestral, ‘ole folks out on the porch’ strain, so the rustic, grainy textures provided by the acoustic and electric strings of David Mansfield and Armand Hirsch are very apposite. The delicate arpeggios of the largely finger picked lines fit hand in glove with the singer’s fluttering melodies. McFerrin has always been able to cover a song with great imagination and a quite heart stopping rendition of ‘Wade In The Water’, where all of the customary momentum and swing of the chorus is redirected towards a more dragging pulse with eerie chording, is brilliant. Ditto ‘The Whole World In His Hands’ and ‘Fix Me Jesus’.

McFerrin’s voice, with the glowing, muted trumpet quality of the upper register well intact, is simply heavenly. The singer performed a short, improvised solo set before the band returned for the highlight of the evening: McFerrin moved to the piano to play ‘Feline’, a gem from his eponymous 1984 debut. It is a timely reminder that the singer – who can transform Beethoven as joyfully as he does Bob Dylan – is also a songwriter of considerable stature.

Following in the footsteps of neighbouring Manchester and its successful annual city-wide jazz festival, the first Liverpool Jazz Festival kicked off this week on Thursday with performances from fast rising stars Roller Trio and local trumpeter Martin Smith’s group The Weave. Things continue tonight with hard skronking Mercury Music Prize nominees Led Bib and local improv crew GORP. All events are being held in the Capstone Theatre, which, since opening in 2010, has established itself with a high-quality programme of leading jazz artists including Courtney Pine, Zoe Rahman, Dennis Rollins, Neil Cowley, Portico Quartet and Phronesis among many others. Saturday sees an opening solo piano set at 2pm from Robert Mitchell, playing music from his latest left-hand-only piano album The Glimpse, followed by local band White Canvas at 4.30pm, with another Mercury Prize nominee Kit Downes headlining at 7.30pm playing a set of music from his forthcoming album Light From Old Stars.

Sunday features powerful post-bop saxophonist Denys Baptise’s hard-firing three-piece, Triumvirate, with bassist Larry Bartley and drummer Moses Boyd who take the likes of D’Angelo’s ‘Brown Sugar’ and Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ and give them a jazz twist. Leading UK saxophonist Pine returns to the Capstone with his barnstorming House Of Legends set that mixes up ska, soca and reggae rhythms with blistering improvisations – all performed by his superb band – which includes impressive guitarist Cameron Pierre. The Sunday programme also includes two jazz workshops – Taming The Saxophone: Tone Production (11am) and How To Improvise Effectively (12.30pm) – as well as performances by other local bands including the Blind Monk Trio and Perri and Neil Quartet.
