Jazz at the Fleece12/08/05 Jazz in pubs has been a mainstay of the UK jazz scene for decades and whereas in some towns and cities jazz in the back room of your local is not as easy to find as in years gone by the scene is thriving in places like Boxford's Fleece in rural Suffolk. The jazz takes place in the upstairs room and is apparently haunted by a local ghost, possibly of a nun. Earlier this year the venue was nominated as one of the venues of the year at the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Jazz started there in 1993 and takes place at the pub on a weekly basis with over 500 gigs taking place with musicians including Stan Tracey, Peter King, Andy Sheppard, John Dankworth, Martin Taylor, Dave Newton and Alan Barnes having performed there. Upcoming dates include the Basil Hodge Quintet on 2 September, Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble on 9 September, Peter King Quartet on 16 September, Polly Gibbons on 23 September and Protect the Beat on 30 September.
