Elephant9 turn up the voltage at Electric Brixton

While Elephant9’s recent studio sets might’ve inaugurated amassing embroideries of moods and motions, last night the troupe opted to snub the subtleties for keen fusion assaults. Feral patchworks of burbling circuits and pugilistic drums escalated into epic improvisatory jams, condensing the most urbane excesses of King Crimson, Weather Report and ELP into surging, oscillating rivers of pink metal flux.

Keys whizz Ståle Storløkken presided over his scorched-wire banks like a battleship corsair fighting for the controls of his star cruiser, the exhaust from his Lesley cab keeping the whole caper afloat as powerhouse drummer Torstein Lofthus pummelled his kit within an inch of our unworthy lives.
