Though never receiving his full dues as a band leader, Arguelles has produced a very intriguing, if modest-sized catalogue of recordings since 1990. This new solo one-man band effort, a companion CD to the earlier 1996 recording Scapes, is certainly among his very best. Using his ensemble arranging and composing skills, Arguelles has multitracked parts using a full range of wind instruments from the saxophone, flute and clarinet families and ‘saxophone percussion’ (tapping and banging on the saxophone) in a kind of ‘improvised composition’. Varying from solo, duo, to wind ensemble polyphony, Arguelles distills classical, world, folk and jazz forms like they’ve always belonged together.
Throughout Inner Voices you’ll hear hymnal wind polyphony, dance grooves, buoyant township tunes and classical forms from canon to 12-tone explorations. Whereas this kind of mix could turn into an intellectual exercise in post-modernity in lesser hands, Arguelles relies on emotional instinct to tie it all together. A fascinating glimpse into the world of one of the most expressive jazz saxophonists this country has produced in the last quarter of a century.
