In + Out records IRCD77095-2 *** Johnny Griffin (ts), Roy Hargrove (t), James Pearson/Dave Newton (p), Reggie Johnson (b), Billy Cobham (d) and Paul Kuhn (p, v, 1 track). Rec. 26-27 May 2008
So the live set reviewed in Jazzwise 121 has turned into two-thirds of Griffin’s final album. I can readily believe the recorded project was intended for release before his demise, but that adds an extra poignancy. The fact that Griff was not at his best, but still trying and largely succeeding, is a tribute to his ebullient spirit, recognisable in the flesh and in the playing – hinted at too in a single announcement.
Everyone plays well without overshadowing the leader, particularly Newton and Hargorve, who treats the ‘What Is This Thing’-derived ‘Hot Sake’ to a selection of quotes from famous solos on the same chord-sequence. The material new to me includes the opening ‘Lester Leaps in’, the only track with Pearson on piano, and Hargrove’s ballad entitled ‘Mentor’ on which Griffin lays out. The remaining track has neither trumpet nor tenor, nor come to that Pearson/Newton, being a brief trio feature for the stilted piano and gravelly voice of Paul Kuhn, who is big in Germany, but why?
