Currently one of the finest groups in jazz, the Branford Marsalis Quartet is celebrating its tenth year together. It is a significant anniversary since during that time, the group has refined a collective identity that is more than just the sum of its component parts. The group members have developed an integrated group sound. It means their music assumes a powerful focus and intensity that is nowhere better demonstrated than on ‘The Return of the Jitney.’ A combination of shifting meters within an ad hoc compositional form, the group has internalised the complexities of the composition that allows the quartet to bring nuance and expressive depth to a piece that could easily end up being an exercise in complexity for complexity’s sake. Equally, there is a vigour and swagger to Monk’s clever line over the rhythm changes on ‘Rhythm-A-Ning,’ where they succeed in placing the composition in a fresh light by imposing their collective musical personality upon it. Yet the group has a wide emotional range, their treatment of the original ballads ‘The Blossom of Parting’ and ‘The Last Goodbye’ indicative of artistic growth from their Grammy-winning debut as a group on Contemporary Jazz in 2000, yet also displaying enormous potential for the future.
