| Count Basie and His Orchestra Play Music By Neal Hefti – On My Way & Shoutin’ Again! **** |

Rec. 2, 3 and 5 Nov 1962 Not known for handing out unsolicited verbal bouquets, Miles Davis truly nailed it when he opined “if it wasn’t for Neal Hefti, the Basie Band wouldn’t sound as good as it does.” No argument there. When, following an 18-month period that forced the Count to down-size to an Octet, he moved back to Clef (now rebranded Verve) in 1962, it was Hefti who Basie called in to reboot his recording career. It made good sense. Previously, it was Hefti who first shaped what became known as The Count’s “New Testament” band and later created the Atomic Mr Basie album. Hefti’s less-is-more simplification was perfect. It was never about pinning listeners back in their seat. The real strength of this highly rhythmic Hefticrafted-Basie aggregation was the joyous juxtaposition of precision section playing (‘Together Again’), humorous slinky blues (‘The Long Night’) all enhanced by a plethora of fine soloists including Thad Jones, Eric Dixon, the two Franks – Foster and Wess and driven by Freddie Green’s chunk-chunkchunk acoustic guitar and Sonny Payne’s master class drumnastics. And then there was the leader’s trademark single finger piano. Game, set and match. Review: Roy Carr
