Heads Up HUCD 3155 | Stanley Clarke (b), Hiromi (p) and Lenny White (d). Rec. date not stated

Clarke told me that this, his first “official” acoustic trio album, was an “art” release, that he “couldn’t care less if a radio station played it,” as it is “purely an art album with the hope that some of the fans who are into me would find it and go ‘oh, this is something else’.” Certainly, those who know him from Toys Of Men or Return to Forever are in for a distinctly-pleasant surprise, as the bass man strolls, laughs and indeed hums his way through a mix of artfully reworked standards (he takes the lead on ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’), favourites from his own history and original compositions – the playful, Clifford Brown-inspired ‘3 Wrong Notes’. Best of all there’s Clarke’s original voice bursting out of a couple more bass folk songs. Hiromi fans will be even more surprised. Previous recordings have pitched her as a kind of Corea-esque, fusion stylist. Yet here she restrains those excesses within her cinematic compositions (‘Sicilian Blue’), a fleet flight through Miles’ ‘Solar’ and her own exercise in high speed chops ‘Brain Training’. It must be said that at times her solos sound as if they have been cut and pasted into the vibe just as the trio is photoshopped on to the CD cover. But there is enough of Clarke, recorded in a fulsome, rich sound, and his natural intimacy with White to compensate. Andy Robson
