Golden Beans Productions KRM CD 1150 | Danilo Perez (p; el p), John Patitucci (b) and Jack DeJohnette (d; mdca). Rec. date not stated

This combined CD and DVD set charts the progress of one of the most quietly rewarding associations in American jazz in recent years. DeJohnette, Patitucci and Perez each possess an impressive CV that speaks of years of music making at the highest level of their profession and perhaps the most refreshing thing about this collection is that nobody feels the need to prove anything – that they are the fastest, the quickest, the most technically gifted, the most harmonically clever.

They could do, but they don’t. Instead, they get inside the music, teasing it this way and that without feeling the inner necessity to flaunt their “supergroup” credentials. Indeed, the opening ‘Tango African’ is an almost leisurely exposition of the DeJohnette original with the composer stating the theme on melodica. Equally pieces such as ‘Earth Prayer’, ‘Soulful Ballad’ or ‘Earth Speaks’ are positively self effacing, yet mature statements by fine musicians that are rich in meaning and nuance. Stuart Nicholson
