To coincide with the Brit Jazz Fest at Ronnie Scott’s last year jazzwisemagazine.com presented a unique interview with three key figures from the UK jazz scene past and present. Pianist Michael Garrick, recently awarded an MBE, and saxophonist Don Rendell were in the vanguard of first generation jazz pioneers that witnessed the birth of bebop in Britain but went on to develop their own distinctive sound and musical vision. DJ, broadcaster and label boss Gilles Peterson created a hugely popular revival of this rich period of 1960s jazz when he unearthed some long forgotten gems from the vaults with his two Impressed… compilations that also coincided with the BBC’s Jazz Britannia TV series and introduced this far sighted music to a new generation of younger listeners. Gathered here for a unique three-way interview convened in 2003 this is a rare chance to hear the views of these key figures from the development of UK jazz over the last 50 years.
