A not-for-profit voluntary organisation Derby Jazz has been staging top quality gigs for more than 25 years, but right from its earliest days it’s also been committed to education and the development of local artists. In March last year Derby Jazz celebrated its twenty-fifth year with five days of jazz that featured performances by 25 bands all of which were led by, or prominently featured, musicians from Derby.  As part of the celebration, and with a National Lottery funded Grants for the Arts award from Arts Council England, and grants from PRS Foundation and Derby City Council, Derby Jazz also commissioned new work from Corey Mwamba, Phil Robson and Graham Collier, while other artists, including Jonny Phillips, Tom Cawley, John Bailey and Joshua Blackmore also wrote new music specially for Derby Jazz Week. Arts Council England also supported the video documentation of the week by Derby film maker Doug Smith. The nine tracks on this DVD have been selected from the 20 pieces he filmed and recorded during the week. All documented live, with no second takes or studio remixes, we think this is as near to a live set as it gets.
