Frøy Aagre with Kenny Wheeler - 16/11/08 Spice of Life, LJF

One of Norway's leading saxophonists, Frøy Aagre has helped cement her reputation abroad following a versatile set on Sunday evening, playing to an attentive audience crammed into the Spice of Life. Aagre is no stranger to Britain having lived and studied in Birmingham and London for four years, and appeared relaxed as she introduced her young quartet, comprising Andreas Ulvo on piano, Freddy Wike on drums and Audun Ellingsen on bass. Testing new material, she approved quite a few tracks for future release on the back of the warm rounds of applause each received.

Aagre's sound is measured and crisp. Each note seems to expand as it reels through the air, and she has a habit of smiling wistfully to herself as though she were watching a swallow darting invisibly through the room. At times, such as on the track 'Where's an Envelope', the music verged towards the languid, but the punch and funk that characterised compositions such as 'Factory' and '3/4' ensured that heads kept nodding, rather than heads nodded-off.

Following the interval, the band was joined onstage by the legendary Kenny Wheeler. Hunched over his sheet music and half-obscured by his flugelhorn, Wheeler's very presence introduced a new imperative, something reflected in an added bite and depth to the sound. Reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, Wheeler stretches phrases until time slows down; carving a timbre that makes the most complex of questions appear fundamental. The apex of the evening was reached on ‘Present Past’, where his lines jostled and toyed with those of Aagre, both ringed by splashes of colour from Ulvo on the keys. When one hears a searching recital of such beautiful music, you cannot help but feel that this demands to be heard by many more than the privileged few in attendance.
