Stan Sulzmann 60th Birthday Gig – 606 Club, LJF

I'd missed the name of an original composition at the end of the first set. It was an evening celebrating Stan Sulzmann's 60th birthday at the Royal Academy of Music and the title may be significant. Pondering this failing in the gents at the interval, I find I am in fact hanging out next to the composer and star of the evening. He was happy to confirm the name – ‘Nepapanees’ - and its provenance; "I saw the word in a Canadian book I was reading and nicked it". That's jazz for you.

The birthday boy was on equally cheerful form on the bandstand fronting a variety of lineups featuring many of the current students from the jazz department at the Royal Academy. To help him celebrate, his long time friend John Taylor occupied the piano stool for much of the evening, imbuing the lovingly arranged pieces with his unique brand of sonorous lyricism. He and Sulzmann also indulged in a delightful duet on Kenny Wheeler's "Everybody's Song But My Own", a quiet and intimate chat between friends to which we were invited to eavesdrop.

If musical credentials were impeccable, the almost tangible (if understandable) air of respect from the students did at first render the music a little too academic. Note perfect arrangements, but delivered in a strait jacket. The shackles were suddenly dropped in ‘Nepapanees’ as the ten-piece band came alive, playing from the heart rather than the page, as if wishing to warm the stage for the full big band performance of Stan's specially written suite ‘Splashes’.

An appreciative audience of jazzers, student family members and more than a few of Stan's contemporaries including Kenny Wheeler, guitarist John Parricelli and the great Michael Garrick joined in the good wishes as the band played a surprise arrangement of "Happy Birthday to you" and Stan was given a present on stage before the party broke up. Sixty not out.
