Chick Corea/John McLaughlin Five Peace Band - 23/11/08 RFH, LJF

John McLaughlin and Chick Corea sauntered on stage with the laid-back nonchalance which comes with knowing that even if they just waved at the adoring crowd and went home, their place in the pantheon of jazz megastars would still be secure. Fortunately, we got somewhat more than that.

They opened proceedings by drifting into a duet of "Stella by Starlight". The standard was given pensive and thoughtful treatment, as if the pair wanted to remind us they could still play quietly, before getting down to the real business of the evening which was, not unexpectedly, loud, fast and faster.

As the rest of the band appeared the move into mega-star jazz rock mode was instantaneous. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta wore sweatpants and a sleeveless T-shirt, sticks already in hand. Kenny Garrett cradled his alto, Corea moved to his electric keyboards and Christian McBride flashed so much bling as he hefted his bass guitar, some may have wondered how he ever got past airport security. The tech men danced attendance as the band powered into their first number, McBride the embodiment of musical hip, looking as cool as Colaiuta was hot, sweat dripping down his face as he powered the groove with astonishing speed and accuracy around the kit.

If saxophonist Kenny Garrett seemed a little hesitant in McLaughlin's "New Blues, Old Bruise", he opened out as the evening went on with more expansive solos, though never reaching the heights of which he's capable. He wasn't helped by being rather low in the mix, behind Colaiuta's drum pyrotechnics. The latter's technique remains a constant astonishment on the up tempo numbers, but he was less happy on the ballads. Whilst there was a sample of some crisp brushwork, it was rapidly abandoned as if he was outside his comfort zone.

Undoubtedly a master of his instrument, McLaughlin has been cursed with chronic "Take Five" syndrome for many years now. Just as every Dave Brubeck concert since 1959 has had to feature the 5/4 classic, so McLaughlin fans expect his trademark lightning runs up and down the guitar. He didn't disappoint them. How much more he might have to say without this rod for his own back remains for now a point of conjecture.

Favouring electric keyboards for most of the evening, Corea, who has a wonderful rapport with the audience, made his most telling contributions on acoustic piano. His duets with the ever-musical McBride provided some of the high spots and left one hungry to hear more of the pairing. For his part the bassist shone as brightly as the light glinting off his heavy gold necklace and he was unhurried and slick on upright acoustic or electric bass guitar, whatever the tempo.

The band delivered - and were treated to a standing ovation before an encore of "In a Silent Way". "Thank you friends - you make me feel at home," McLaughlin had told the audience. There was little doubt the sentiment was mutual.
