The concept for tonight’s concert was incredibly innovative. The Heritage Orchestra teamed up with The Bays for an hour and a half of improvisation spanning the jazz, classical and dance genres. The five-piece John Metcalfe band were the perfect support act, leading organically on to the main performance. The mainly string-based group played a short set that got off to a slow start, with ambient whale-like harmonics taking centre stage, but worked up to stark discordant double stopping, perfectly phased with drum and bass inspired beats. When the Heritage Orchestra and The Bays came on stage it was clear what was going to make tonight’s performance so successful: anticipation. The score was composed live at the venue with LCD screens transferring music to the orchestra in real time. When the gig started there were literally minutes of silence as the performers waited for the notes to appear. After building up the riffs and note sequences in the string and wind sections, The Bays slowly pervaded this Chamber music with deep bellows of bass. The stunning visuals brought the whole piece together and the conductor was the star of the show – with control akin to a puppet master over the players. Like a Symphony, the performance was almost all one piece, but there were inevitable breaks as the tension died down. Sometimes these chill-out sections were rather prolonged and the dark lighting sapped the excitement. Spanning a wide range of music soundscapes, the climax of each section always seemed so close and somehow became even more intense. The music was begging for a dance floor and near the end the audience obliged as they took to the aisles and made their own. Tonight was an amazing feat of concentration and creativity and hopefully an evening that will be repeated. Review - Catherine Marks
