This Autumn saw a lively jazz scene in Paris. The JVC Jazz Festival took place in bars all around the French capital from October 10to 182008. This marvellous venture offered a breadth of jazz music pervading concert rooms including La Cigale, Bataclan and New Morning and presenting jazz stars such as Herbie Hancock, Bjorn Berge and the Hadouk Trio. In addition, Lizz Wright electrified the public at La Cigale on November 28 and Yaelle Naim astounded the audiences of Folies Bergères from November 13 to 15.

Patricia Barber received a particularly warm reception amongst the Parisian listeners playing tracks from her new Cole Porter during her performance at La Cigale on October 18. Particularly memorable, ‘Snow’ blended lyrical piano compositions and suave lyrics: ‘Do you think of me like snow?’ followed by ‘Cool, slippery or white?’

Lizz Wright gave a sensational performance at the same venue on November 28. ‘Old Man’ was a powerful composition distinguished its sense of brooding tension culminating with a majestic climax. The singer instilled the concert hall with her low and soothing voice providing the audiences with candid lyrics.

Yaelle Naim’s performance at Folies Bergères on November 15 was relaxed and informal. Effortlessly, the singer frolicked the stage and strolled down the concert hall. Wearing a gypsy style red polka dress, quaint boots and arm muffs, she joked with the audiences and recounted stories of her life in Paris. The less familiar song ‘Too Long’ conveyed a feeling of anxious melancholy and child-like innocence. Mellow and intriguing, this track presented a choir effect of singing voices and a section sung by Naim in Hebrew.

As a result, the jazz season has only just begun with myriads of fantastic gigs calling on the French metropolis this November. A note for your jazz diary: the New Mexico jazz star Raul Midon will perform on November 30 at La Maroquinerie.
