Robert Glasper - 18/11/08 Cargo, LJF

Following his acclaimed LP In my Element released on Blue Note last year, and a string of gigs that have left ears reeling, the pianist Robert Glasper has cultivated a formidable reputation in a short space of time. Playing with his trio under the brick arches of Shoreditch’s Cargo and as part of the welcome new Edge ’08 fringe festival, Glasper offered proof, if more was needed, of the vitality and relevance of jazz music in 2008.

Having let the audience simmer in anticipation, Glasper took to the stage in jovial spirits, professing his admiration for the music of the singer and actress Bette Midler before jotting down a tongue in cheek cover of her song ‘The Rose’. Then the drums, the drums, the drums...But before turning attention towards the prodigious drumming talent of Chris Dave, it is worth providing context to Glasper’s music. Born of the beat generation, Glasper is as much influenced by DJ Premier or J Dilla, as he is Cecil Taylor or Thelonious Monk. Switching between a Rhodes and acoustic piano, his style on the night was tougher than that heard on his LP, at times relentlessly pursuing a theme, hammering new meaning and multiple implications from a single chord.

Perhaps this impetus is understandable, given the force of the drummer with whom he shared the stage. I had heard of the name of Dave mentioned a few times previously, but was unprepared for the explosive velocity and sheer precision of the man, and without sight of his hands, couldn’t be sure that he wasn’t just hitting the buttons of an MPC or Roland drum machine. Able to change tempo and drop volume in an instant, he appears to syncopate thoughts before they have even occurred, and very almost stole the show. Vital.
