Enthralled into a melodious introduction, the Gwilym Simcock trio established what was to be an evening rich in sound. Chords thickened with textural intricacy, Simcock on piano harmonising echoed depth with harped occasions, Yuri Goloubev thoughtfully seasoning the spaces on bass found the trio melting into an intuitive lock under Asaf Sirkis’ delicately precise timing on drums. Saxophonist Ian Ballamy in his original, ‘Floater’ complimented the title with rapid glides of rising intervals while standard ‘My Foolish Heart’ engaged Simcock and Ballamy in an empathised lyrical duet. The second set sprinkled with Sirkis' fusion of dynamic feathered interjections, a peak into Simcocks new-ish Samuel Barber inspired composition ‘Barber Blues’, employing suspenseful riffs culminated in an abrupt tight finish. The evening concluded with an encore to ‘Autumn Leaves’ intelligently embedded within Ballamy’s rippling intro, Simcock's solo stealing the show through a blended balance of both his technical prowess and creative agility. – Samrit Teckle
