Dexter is desperately looking for the “money” song but must be convinced it’s beneath her. As a vocalist and songwriter, she blends Soul and Jazz in a sincere way, which chart success could only harm her credibility and versatility. Dexter’s high notes and quick flow throw us past nasty breakups and into key life lessons as much embedded in her repertoire. Dominant drummer Rod Youngs and pianist Nick Ramm allowed Dexter to present the Beatles and Marvin Gaye with funk and reggae flavors, without taking the edge off popular music’s finest. This was a friendly farewell show for the U.S-based singer, after a short run of UK dates since last October. Dexter’s new born son was presented and one can surely envy a childhood with Jazz clubs set as its backdrop. He can take his nap now, knowing mom’s late night set was also a time well spent for grownups. – Gabi Tartakovsky
